Science on Tap: What Happens When Beliefs Change

May 10 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Science on Tap is an opportunity for conversation, debate and interaction between scientists and the public while drinking beer. Each month at SpeakEZ Lounge, a knowledgeable expert hosts a discussion about scientific current topics such as cutting edge cancer detection techniques, climate change and brewing beer.

This is a great chance to exercise your academic interests in a casual setting while enjoying great food and adult beverages!

This month: What Happens When Beliefs Change

People sometimes change beliefs about social or scientific topics when they read information suggesting they are incorrect. In this talk, Michael Wolfe from the Dept. of Psychology at Grand Valley State University will discuss two things that happen when beliefs change: 1. People show very little awareness of these changes and appear to think their beliefs have not changed. 2. People show belief-based biases in their ability to evaluate arguments, and these biases change along with belief changes. Practical implications relating to current scientific and political issues will be discussed.
